Day #2 of solo camping trip

This afternoon I hiked up a long, steep access road long ago abandoned. At some point this road was to include an entry way to a more rural trail, though at no point could I find the trailhead. The hiking along this old road was actually quite nice, moving through stands of old Doug Fir with wonderful wild flowers lining my path. After hiking for about an hour without site of the trail I decided to continue walking the road until I could find the end. It took about 5 miles of hiking before I came to the stopping point on the ridge of this mountain, and was amazing to find myself at a magnificent vista point, where I stopped to reflect on my hike and record in this wonderful environment.

The image accompanying today’s post was taken at the end vista point during my hike.

Day #1 of solo camping trip:

This weekend I decided to go on a solo camping trip up into the North Cascades. I took a route I haven’t yet traveled, driving up into the mountains past Darrington, WA and onto the Mountain Loop byway. Not long outside of Darrington the road turns into a double-land, and at times single-lane gravel road for about 40 miles before connecting with pavement on the northern side of the mountains. I recorded this piece after establishing my campsite for the night along the banks of Clearwater Creek.

Last night I learned of the passing of the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman, one of my musical fathers and sonic guides. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. I recorded this piece at dusk beside the river, the second dusk of my life without Ornette on the earth. Rest In Peace father Coleman.

The image accompanying today’s post was taken beside Clearwater Creek.
