Location: The orchestra room at Chief Sealth International High School. Seattle, WA
Instrument: Tenor saxophone

Notes:

I found myself alone in the orchestra room this afternoon at Chief Sealth High School for about 10 between. This was time between teaching music students for a camp Iâm helping to run this week. This piece was recorded in a sea of about 25 large steel drums. They provided an excellent reverb in this otherwise very dead room.

Location: A neighborhood suburb of Redmond, WA
Instrument: Tenor saxophone

Notes:

This improvisation was recorded in a suburb of Redmond in a cookie-cutter neighborhood. I had about an hour between students and found myself obsessed with the sterile, tepid environment of this neighborhood, which was surrounded by the lush green forests and marshland typical of this area. I set up my recording gear on a strip of immaculately manicured lawn that separated the sidewalk and the road. Washington is currently in a state of drought due to a lack of rain and the past Winterâs light snow pack, but every yard in this 200+ housing development had a lush green yard out front.

Location: Sand Point Beach in Olympic National Park
Instrument: Soprano saxophone

Notes:

This weekend I ventured into Olympic National Park in the western segment along the Washington coast. This was a short backpacking trip with only a 3 mile walk in. I stayed at Sand Point, an extraordinary stretch of beach that juts out into the ocean, exposing rock formations and butting up against a large cliff wall, with massive strands of kelp exposed at low tide. I camped in a clearing about 50 feet from the waterâs edge. When this improvisation was recorded rain had then begun falling for a full day. I recorded this improvisation while inside my tent practicing. Rain splatter can be heard against the tent ceiling as I recorded.
